The evolution of luxury continues as creative director Vincent Van Duysen transforms the prior iteration of Augusto into a versatile modular system, blending timelessness with contemporary flair. Retaining its classic aesthetic, the 2024 Augusto sofa embodies the welcoming spirit of Molteni&C, offering both comfort and sophistication. The modular system includes lateral and central elements for enhanced functionality, and chaise lounges and islands as relaxation zones. From compact spaces to spacious rooms, Augusto provides stylish solutions tailored to diverse needs.

Augusto is available in a range of Molteni&C fabrics curated by designer Marta Ferri, with specially designed options available including classic leather finishes and innovative vegetable-tanned leather crafted from olive residue, accented by either matching leather or grosgrain fabric piping.

The various elements of the Augusto sofa combine to create a haven for both relaxation and interaction. The lateral, central, curvilinear, and island elements each measure to a depth of 100cm, while the chaise lounge boasts a depth of 160cm.

The Augusto sofa, by Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen, is an exploration of contrasts: where past meets present and technical innovation meets the expert craftsmanship of Molteni&C.
The key to Augusto’s timeless aesthetic is the balance of soft, upholstered seats with the sophistication of its modern metal structure, creating a uniquely harmonious design that blends seamlessly with a multitude of environments. To enhance Augusto's unique silhouette, elegant piping runs along the cushions, defining their shape.

“For this new sofa, we have accentuated its architectural and graphical presence. The proportions are generous with more voluminous elements, a clean departure from previous work with Molteni&C”

states Vincent Van Duysen

In conceiving the Augusto sofa, Van Duysen started with the idea of total comfort. He examined precisely the way the body would sink into its voluminous seat, recline into its cushioned backrest, or simply lean on its elegant, square-shaped armrests. Only once these factors were determined did he begin forming the shape, which incorporates a flush metal base that runs around the perimeter of the sofa emphasizing its volume and making it appear almost weightless.

Augusto represents a novelty compared to past Molteni&C collections: it is in fact a non-modular sofa, available in two depths - 100 cm and 116 cm and four configurations - 185, 205, 235, 270 cm - plus an element with a depth of 150 cm, offering maximum flexibility and versatility to adapt to any living space. The deeper element creates a chaise longue style seat.

The frame is composed of solid wood while the padding is made of high-bearing, variable-density polyurethane foam, ensuring maximum comfort. The seat cushions are made of recycled and recyclable PET polyester fibre. The painted aluminium base rests on the ground thanks to aluminium feet with non-slip tips. The seats represent the ultimate in softness.

“The piping detail, envisaged as tone-on-tone or with a contrast effect, provides a distinctive and captivating appearance and adds an interesting graphic element, which draws the shape of the object and drives the eye to discover its sinuous lines”

says Van Duysen.

Augusto is available in all of the Molteni&C textile and leather colours, and can be embellished with eleven different options of piping - Anthracite, dark brown, olive green, paper white, beaver, leather, iron, black, cream, sand and mouse - allowing one to customise the sofa’s aesthetic.

Vincent Van Duysen

Vincent Van Duysen was born in 1962, in Lokeren, Belgium and graduated in architecture at the Higher Institute of Architecture Sint-Lucas, in Ghent. From 1986 to 1989 he worked in Milan and Brussels. He opened his own studio in Antwerp, in 1990 focusing on architecture and interior design. The relationship between interior design and architecture in his work is profound. Furnishings and accessories are designed with an architectural perspective that is not limited by form, but is expressed with a careful perception of interior space and its relationship to the exterior architecture. By interpreting architecture and redefining its proportions, Van Duysen creates objects of great purity and simplicity that still retain a concrete character and solid form.
