Gio Ponti leaned on nautical inspiration to design this armchair that was destined for use on ocean liners and today is a part of Molteni&C's Heritage Collection. A contoured backrest provides support and style while a solid wood structure and sumptuous linen fabric upholstery give this a robust armchair its distinctive character.

( Product Care )
Wood
For everyday maintenance dust with a soft dry cloth. For greasy, oily marks (fingerprints) we advise cleaning the surface with alcohol diluted in water, drying immediately with a soft cloth. Products containing acetone, bleach and solvents should be avoided, as should abrasive products, furniture wax and hard fibre cloths (linen and synthetics) which could ruin and/or scratch surfaces. All these operations should be carried out with great care, avoiding heavy pressure. Exposure to direct sunlight can alter the paint or wood colour. For gloss finishes, continued maintenance in time may cause scratching and a reduction in the shiny effect.
Linen
For weekly cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner with soft brushes and a clothes brush along the direction of the pile. If done carefully, this will help eliminate linen filaments that stick out of the textile fibre, which will result in a smooth fabric surface and maintain the aesthetic and mechanical properties of the covers over time. Following the previous operation, periodically treat the surfaces with an adhesive brush (to remove loose filaments) along the direction of the pile. To remove creases typical of linen products, place a cloth over the fabric and press with a steam iron. Use steam moderately. For better results, if creases are pronounced, it is advisable to mist the surface to be treated. Use a spray bottle filled with water before ironing.
Velvet
Weekly cleaning should be carried out with a vacuum cleaner fitted with soft brushes and then by hand with a clothes brush, taking care to brush in the same direction as the pile. At regular intervals, after this procedure, we advise using an adhesive brush (eliminating detached threads), always in the direction of the pile. To eliminate colour changes due to fabric flattening we advise using steam on the surfaces with an iron at 110°, always taking care to separate iron and fabric with a cloth. To eliminate more resistant or stubborn marks, vaporize the surface at a distance of about 5/10 cm and simultaneously brush respecting the direction of the fleece (generally from top to bottom) using a brush with soft fibers. If tide marks are caused by contact with liquids, dampen the whole surface of the upholstery (not just the tide mark area) using a household spray until the surface colour is uniform. Wait for the upholstery to dry naturally (do not use direct heat) and brush in the direction of the pile as mentioned above. This procedure, carried out with care, helps to make the fabric surface more uniform and maintain its good looks and structure over time. If dry cleaning is necessary please refer to specialised firm, providing the technical reference sheet that comes along with the product itself.
Chenille
For weekly cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner with soft brushes and a clothes brush along the direction of the pile. At regular intervals, after this procedure, we advise using an adhesive brush (eliminating detached threads), always in the direction of the pile. These procedures, carried out with care, limit the colour change effect due to the pile being flattened, keeping the fabric alive and maintaining through time its good looks and structure. ( Description )
Nautical furnishings had long been a source of fascination for Gio Ponti when he was commissioned to design an armchair for four ocean liners and two cruises between 1949–1951: the Conte Grande, the Africa, the Oceania, the Conte Biancamano, the Andrea Doria and the Giulio Cesare. His creation, D.151.4, appeared on each, with slight variations in design to match the ship’s interior. This piece captures the spirit of refined travel, blending timeless style with thoughtful ergonomics.

D.151.4 ARMCHAIR GIO PONTI
Always passionate about nautical furnishings, Gio Ponti gained direct experience in four ocean liners and two cruise ships upgraded or built from scratch after the war, between 1949 and 1951: the Conte Grande, Africa, Oceania, Conte Biancamano, Andrea Doria and Giulio Cesare. Ponti designed this easy chair with slight variants for these ships.
