Borgo Santandrea, a cliffside hotel on the Amalfi Coast, is a passion project that unites two Italian families who bring generations of hospitality experience. The property, which combines Mid-Century design with classic Mediterranean style, has 29 guestrooms and 16 suites, each one offering uninterrupted views of the sea and of the ancient fisherman’s hamlet of Conca dei Marini. Molteni&C collaborated with architect Rino Gambardella and other Italian artisans to furnish the hotel.

White and blue hues feature throughout, alongside geometric hand-painted tiles, vintage furniture, and handcrafted pieces by local Amalfitano artisans. To reach the hotel’s private beach – which is a rarity on the rocky Amalfi Coast – guests will descend the cliffside in a lift, or amble down a series of walkways and staircases amongst the fragrant terraced gardens of olive and lemon trees.

      Inspired by the building’s origins in the 1960s, the owners sought to bring attention to the original mid-century features whilst creating a ‘home’ that was unmistakably Italian. A labor of love with a team of designers and landscapers that worked hand-in-hand with architect Rino Gambardella to ensure every corner of the property was a thoughtful reflection of Italian artistry and craftsmanship.

      The resulting interiors are a ‘Made in Italy’ showcase: from iconic re-editions of Gio Ponti pieces done by leading Italian designer Molteni, to custom items from family-run furniture designers Tosconova and Lisar, to De Castelli bronze and aged brass pieces all mixed with a vast collection of Italian, Argentinian and Nordic mid-century vintage furniture and lighting that the owners have collected over the years.

      The link with the Amalfi Coast is evident also in the art collection, with wonderful creations from local ceramic artists Lucio Liguori and Marco Fusco. A critical role has been played by gifted craftsmen, like the ornate railings produced by the local blacksmith Piero Esposito or the floor-to-ceiling solid walnut bookshelves produced by Milanese carpenter Paolo Erba.

       

      Commenting on the opening, Maurizio Orlacchio, Co-Owner and General Manager said:

      “We are so excited to open the doors of Borgo Santandrea. It has been a beautiful challenge over the past four years to restore the property and we feel proud to have brought so many talented artisans and iconic Italian brands together to create a one-of-a-kind hotel that is truly ‘Made in Italy’.”

      Guests will find 31 different types of locally handmade and hand-painted tiles, a two-year project done with local producer Cotto Vietri and inspired by the geometric classic decor of nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as modern design.

      The intricate blue and white tiles go hand-in-hand with Once Milano linens and Dedar and Rubelli textiles that reflect the far-reaching views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. 

      White Italian marble, most of it recovered and selected from Puglia, Veneto and Tuscany regions, sheathes surfaces around the property and reflects the light from the hand-blown Venetian glass lamps produced by Venicem that are dotted throughout the hotel.

      Three restaurants and two bars, located between the highest points of the hotel (90 meters above sea level), offer classic Mediterranean fare. Guests are invited to enjoy the three state-of-the-art kitchens designed by Andrea Viacava. Under the direction of Executive Chef Crescenzo Scotti, the three restaurants, La Libreria, Alici and Borgo Beach Club are a tribute to local cousine and its fresh local ingredients.

      Molteni&C took part in this great project furnishing Borgo Santandrea with iconic pieces designed by Gio Ponti, such as the D.153.1, D.151.4 and D.156.3 armchairs and the D.555.2 small tables, as well as the Attico small tables designed by Nicola Gallizia.

      Nautical furnishings had long been a source of fascination for Gio Ponti when he was commissioned to design an armchair for four ocean liners and two cruises between 1949–1951: the Conte Grande, the Africa, the Oceania, the Conte Biancamano, the Andrea Doria and the Giulio Cesare. His creation, D.151.4, appeared on each, with slight variations in design to match the ship’s interior. This piece captures the spirit of refined travel, blending timeless style with thoughtful ergonomics.

      An emblem of Italian design heritage, the D.153.1 armchair carries the unmistakable touch of Gio Ponti. Originally created in 1953 for his private residence on Via Dezza in Milan and reintroduced by Molteni&C from Ponti’s own archival drawings, the piece captures the designer’s modernist spirit, inviting a dialogue between history and contemporary living.

      Gio Ponti’s design for D.156.3 captures the essence of Italian modernism. Created in 1956 for the American company Altamira, founded by the nephew of De Cuevas, this piece was proudly showcased in New York alongside works by celebrated designers such as Ico Parisi and Franco Albini, reflecting the vibrant dialogue between Italian craftsmanship and international modernity at the 10th Milan Triennale.

      The D.552.2 small table captures Gio Ponti’s architectural genius through its elegant balance of materials and proportions. Designed originally in 1952, this piece embodies Ponti's architectural fantasy, a virtuoso display of spans, an acrobatic feat of proportions, a criss-cross of joints.
