The legendary founder of NYC’s Studio 54, Ian Schrager is now determined to revolutionize the city’s hospitality industry by offering the ultimate in high-end accommodations at a radically accessible price point with his PUBLIC hotel. Schrager’s idea was simple: create the amenity-rich experience of exclusive design hotels, but without the exclusivity. Custom oak millwork by Molteni&C|Contract Division completes Schrager’s vision for guest rooms that spare nothing in the pursuit of design excellence.
Every one of the 380 guest rooms features at least one custom bed – 400 in total – designed and crafted by Molteni&C from natural oak.

The wooden bed alcoves are a simple, stunning, and modern interpretation of the Jefferson bed, serving to separate a distinct area for sleeping and relaxation from the rest of the room, while allowing for continuity throughout the space. The wooden frame, which also holds each room’s TV and shelf for remote, highlights the bed as a destination, rather than a bridge between two spaces. The alcoves, gently backlit with indirect LEDs, were assembled in each space, created to directly affix to walls, floors, and ceilings, unique to each room’s exact configurations. In addition to the beds, Molteni&C created 297 ergonomically flowing wooden benches using rows and rows of fluted dowels from the same natural oak.
